Recognition and a security guarantee: US President Biden praised Poland during his visit and promised assistance in the event of an attack. Article 5 of the NATO treaty is a “sacred obligation”.

That was it, the sentence that NATO allies in Eastern Europe – and perhaps especially the leadership in Poland – have been waiting for: After his meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda, US President Joe Biden declared that NATO’s article on the alliance case was for the US a “sacred obligation”. Duda can rely on that. “For your freedom and ours.”

The US also pledged to cooperate with Poland on the planned construction of nuclear power plants. With nuclear power, Poland wants to reduce its dependence on raw materials from Russia.

Meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kuleba

Biden surprisingly met Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba in the morning. Kuleba then summarized the conversation with the US President in a video. Biden has declared that the war against Ukraine will change the history of the 21st century.

And Kuleba added in the clip that that’s exactly what Ukrainians have been saying since 2014. It is not a war against Ukraine, but a war of tyranny against the free world.

Kuleba and Ukraine’s Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov traveled to the Polish capital Warsaw to meet their US counterparts Antony Blinken and Lloyd Austin. After about an hour, the US President joined the conversation and stayed for 40 minutes. The topic was further steps to help Ukraine defend its territory, it said in a written statement afterwards.

Biden wants to give a speech to the “free world”.

In anticipation of the speech that US President Biden plans to give in the evening, representatives of the White House gave an outlook. Biden will speak about the combined efforts of the “free world” to support the people of Ukraine, hold Russia accountable for the brutal war and defend a future based on democratic principles.

Principles that – as Biden had said again and again – must also be fought for in western democracies such as the USA. It is therefore no coincidence that the United States, in addition to pledges of over one billion US dollars for humanitarian aid and several billions in military support, is also making money available to strengthen civil society in Eastern Europe, for example in Poland.
