US politicians: The embellished curriculum vitae of George Santos

In November, George Santos won a seat in the US House of Representatives for the Republicans. Now it turns out that parts of his vita are probably made up. The prosecutor is investigating.

The Fox News anchor didn’t take long to get to her main question: “Aren’t you ashamed?” Tulsi Gabbard asked her interviewee. But George Santos didn’t agree. He could say the same about the Democrats. Joe Biden has been lying to Americans for 40 years and is the President of the United States, said the newly elected Republican representative.

investigation initiated

But the distraction won’t do him any good. The 34-year-old invented parts of his biography, that is now certain. Santos’ forgeries are downright breathtaking, said the Nassau County District Attorney in New York. The Republican has now launched an investigation, US media reports.

His family had lived the American dream, but this dream had become a nightmare for him, that’s how George Santos had sounded during the election campaign. A conservative and openly gay Republican, he won New York’s third congressional district, previously believed safe by Democrats.

discrepancies in the CV

But before Christmas, the “New York Times” and other inconsistencies in his CV were noticed. For example, Santos claimed to be a graduate of Baruch University in New York. But they found no records about him. Nor could the banking house Goldman Sachs confirm that he had worked there as claimed. And there is also no evidence of his family history – he is a descendant of Ukrainian Jews – according to US media reports.

He claimed on Fox News that he was of Jewish descent, he had always identified as a Jew despite being raised Catholic.

New exaggerations and forgeries are uncovered almost daily. His details about his finances are also so unclear that they have now aroused the interest of the investigators.

How could that happen? “The culprit is Santos,” but there are a few co-conspirators, says Steve Israel, a former Democratic congressman in New York, including the Republican party that nominated him and that put his ideological extremism before questions about his qualifications . But the Democrats, who were too sure of victory, are also responsible, according to Israel on CNN.

Republicans need his vote in Congress

The new congress will meet on Tuesday, and Santos still wants to start work there. He’s looking forward to it, he tweeted on Thursday. Several Democrats are calling for his resignation, while some Republicans want an investigation by the House Ethics Committee. Kevin McCarthy, the group leader, has not yet commented. He cannot do without Santos for the time being. He wants to be elected President of the House of Representatives on Tuesday and needs every vote to do so. Also that of the convicted liar.
