US Open – this is how the day went: Swiatek triumphed in New York

Saturday at the US Open in New York was all about the women’s final.

At Arthur Ashe Stadium, Iga Swiatek played against Ons Jabeur.

Jabeur fought for her first Grand Slam title. But Swiatek proved to be the better player and won a Major for the third time.

Jabeur could have been the first African to win a Grand Slam tournament. The Tunisian only lost in the final at Wimbledon.

INFO – Goodbye

I say goodbye to a not always high-class but intense finale. Jabeur risked a lot, but she didn’t always realize it, especially towards the end of the first and beginning of the second set. Swiatek was more stable over long stretches. Tomorrow at 10:00 p.m. the men’s final between Casper Ruud and Carlos Alcaraz begins. You can of course be there live at Eurosport 1, discovery+ and here in the live ticker. Goodbye!

12:15 am Swiatek Jabeur 6-2, 7-6

For the third time in her career and after the French Open for the second time this season, Swiatek wins a Grand Slam title. And that after difficult preparatory tournaments, where things didn’t go according to plan for the Pole. But today she was clearly the better player.

12:10 am Swiatek Jabeur 6-2, 7-6

Swiatek gives up both serves with two quick mistakes in a row. Minibreak advantage for Jabeur. But then Swiatek responds with a great forehand longline to make it 5:5. And shortly thereafter, the world number one has match point. And then Jabeur’s forehand flies far out. Iga Swiatek wins the US Open 2022!

12:04 am Swiatek Jabeur 6-2, 6-6

Jabeur’s attack hit from the T-Line ends up out of bounds. Mini break and 4: 2 for Swiatek when changing sides.

12:00 am Swiatek Jabeur 6-2, 6-6

And again, Jabeur’s own serve is against losing the match. Swiatek rips the side of the racket, but still gets the match point. However, the Pole cannot convert it after a forehand error. Jabeur wins the game to 6:6. It goes into the tie break.

11:49 p.m. Swiatek Jabeur 6-2, 5-5

Jabeur serves against the loss of the match. After a serious forehand mistake by the Tunisian, the score is 15:30. She lets the winner follow from the half field at 30:30. After a return error by Swiatek, the score is 5:5.

11:44 p.m. Swiatek Jabeur 6-2, 5-4

Swiatek finally manages to do it. After a return error by her opponent, the Pole is 5:4.

11:43pm Swiatek Jabeur 6-2, 4-4

The game turns a bit. Jabeur is becoming more confident, reacts quickly on the net and Swiatek makes mistakes. Two break points for Jabeur. The Tunisian misses the first with a forehand error from the T-line, the second she blunders with the backhand. That was the really big chance! With a strong forehand winner from the baseline, Jabeur gets the next chance, which she cannot use either.

11:30pm Swiatek Jabeur 6-2, 4-3

But Swiatek is also struggling. With a nice longline, Jabeur gets two breakballs, but neither of them can use them. Shortly after, she secures the third opportunity and then the slice Jabeurs lands in the net. The break festival in set two continues.

11:25pm Swiatek Jabeur 6-2, 4-2

Jabeur blocks a break chance with a great forehand crossball. The Pole creates the next chance, applies pressure and forces the Tunisian to make a mistake. 4: 2 for Swiatek, who takes the break back.

11:19pm Swiatek Jabeur 6-2, 3-2

Break Jabeur. With a passing shot, she converts her chance and comes up to 2:3. This is currently the image of set one, where the Tunisian also came up to 2: 3. After that, she failed to win the game in the first round.

11:14pm Swiatek Jabeur 6-2, 3-1

The next break against Jabeur threatens. After a double fault, the Tunisian has two breakballs against her. Still, she can fend off both. Then the outsider’s longline gets caught in the net and Swiatek has breakball again. But Jabeur counters with a great serve. She still gets the very important service to make it 1:3.

Jabeur on the ground! Swiatek plays world-class tennis

11:07pm Swiatek Jabeur 6-2, 3-0

Jabeur’s backhand is currently fatal. The Tunisian keeps making mistakes, especially with the slice. Game ball Swiatek to 3:0. And the Pole converts that with a longline passing shot that still scratches the line,

11:02pm Swiatek Jabeur 6-2, 2-0

Jabeur falls! Nothing happens to the Tunisian, but Swiatek can get the breakball. And the world number one transforms that with the backhand on the net. 2:0 for the Pole!

10:58pm Swiatek Jabeur 6-2, 1-0

It’s getting critical for Jabeur. With their own service it’s 30:30 and Swiatek is the one putting the pressure on. She finally forces the Tunisian to make a mistake via the forehand. Jabeur’s attempt to stop it out of necessity fails and Swiatek gets the break ball, which her opponent is able to fend off. It goes several times over debut.

10:48 p.m. Swiatek 6-2 Jabeur

Two more break points for Swiatek, which are also set points. And on the first, the backhand longline Jabeurs lands in the net. With 6: 2 Swiatek gets the first round.

10:40pm Swiatek 4-2 Jabeur

But now it’s Swiatek again who is creating the break chances. And on the second, she puts Jabeur on the defensive and converts with the forehand at the net. 4: 2 for the Pole.

10:35 p.m. Swiatek 3-2 Jabeur

Jabeur has two break chances. And on the second, the Tunisian’s longline fits right into the corner of the field. Everything open again in set one.

10:31pm Swiatek 3-1 Jabeur

Swiatek started much stronger, so it’s all the more important that Jabeur slowly finds momentum. Among other things, the slight outsider convinces with a very nice backhand longline and wins her game to 1:3.

10:23pm Swiatek 2-0 Jabeur

The match begins with serve Swiatek. The world number one initially dominated the rallies and put pressure on the baseline. With the backhand winner from the half field, she turns to win the game. And shortly thereafter, the Pole takes the service from the Tunisian in a hurry and leads 2-0.
