The American musical composer Stephen Sondheim died at the age of 91. This was announced by his lawyer Rick Pappas of the “New York Times”. Accordingly, Sondheim died on Friday in his home in Roxbury, Connecticut, USA.

Sondheim is considered to be the innovator of American musical theater in the second half of the 20th century. He has been awarded numerous prizes. Among other things, he received an Oscar for the song “Sooner or Later” in the film “Dick Tracy”. He received Tony Awards for six musicals and also several Grammys, five Olivier Awards and the Freedom Medal. Sondheim influenced several generations of theater songwriters, particularly with milestones such as “Company” (1970), “Follies” (1971) and “Sweeney Todd” (1979).

“Legendary Songs”

His most famous ballad, Send in the Clowns, has been recorded hundreds of times, including Frank Sinatra and Judy Collins. “The theater has lost one of its greatest geniuses and the world has lost one of its greatest and most original poets,” wrote theater producer Cameron Mackintosh in a tribute. “Unfortunately there is a giant in heaven now. But Stephen Sondheim’s brilliance will still be here as his legendary songs and shows are performed forever and ever.”
