The United States launched strikes in Syria on Sunday, November 12, against two sites linked to Iran in response to attacks against American personnel in the region, said US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. It’s about “precision strikes” against “facilities in eastern Syria used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iranian-affiliated groups”, he said in a press release. Eight fighters affiliated with Iran were killed in the US strikes, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH).

“The strikes were carried out respectively against a training center and a protected residence near the towns of Albu Kamal and Mayadeen”, he clarified. This is the third time in less than three weeks that the US military has targeted sites in Syria that it says are linked to Iran, which supports various armed groups accused by Washington of being behind an increase in attacks against its forces in the Middle East.

Increase in attacks by pro-Iranian groups

The United States targeted a weapons storage site linked to Tehran in Syria on Wednesday and on October 26, the US military struck two other facilities it said were used by Iran and affiliated organizations. The United States declared that these strikes caused no casualties. These strikes are carried out by Washington in response to the increase in attacks by pro-Iranian groups targeting its army in Syria and Iraq (more than 45 since October 17) in the context of the war between Israel and Hamas, the United States.
