US journalist Gershkovich remains in Russian custody

US journalist Gershkovich has been held in Russia for almost a year. The attempt to prevent an extension of the pre-trial detention failed in court.

The American journalist Evan Gershkovich, who was imprisoned on espionage charges, must remain in custody in Russia. His objection to the extension was rejected, according to the press service of the Moscow courts. Gershkovich will remain in custody until March 30.

Arrested on a research trip

The reporter for the “Wall Street Journal” was arrested by the Russian secret service FSB at the end of March 2023 during a research trip in the Urals. Gershkovich is accused of espionage. He faces up to 20 years in prison. The journalist, his family, his employer and the American authorities reject the allegations.

The Russian judiciary has not published any evidence to support its allegations. The case against Gershkovich was classified as secret.
