In recent years, several Americans have been arrested after allegedly crossing into North Korea from China. They were then convicted of espionage or similar charges, but released after US mediation. When then US President Donald Trump unsuccessfully negotiated nuclear disarmament with Head of State Kim Jong Un in 2018, the last three Americans who, as far as is known, were still in North Korean custody were released.
