Amanda Bynes, now 35, has been in the spotlight since she was a teenager. Nine years ago her mother took over her guardianship. This could change soon.

The US actress Amanda Bynes (35) wants to bring about an end to this regulation after almost nine years under guardianship.

Her lawyer, David A. Esquibias, confirmed to the German press agency that Bynes had filed a corresponding application in court in California. The actress believes her condition has improved and guardianship is no longer necessary, Esquibias said in a statement to People.com.

The actress (“Hairspray”) had come to a psychiatric clinic in 2013 after she had noticed several times in public through strange behavior or drunkenness. For example, she had started a small fire in a driveway. A judge gave her mother guardianship at the time.

Bynes has been in the public eye since she was young

In 2018, Bynes spoke about her past drug use in an interview with the US magazine “Paper”. “I went through a deep valley and made it and survived,” said the actress.

As a teenager, Bynes had success with the comedy show “The Amanda Show” (1999-2002) on Nickelodeon. This was followed by hit comedies such as “Lies have short legs” (2002), “What Girls Want” (2003) and “Hairspray” (2007). Her last major role to date was in 2010 with Emma Stone in Easy To Have.

Most recently, pop star Britney Spears’ guardianship dispute made headlines. The 40-year-old was under her father’s guardianship for 13 years after she collapsed mentally in 2008 due to personal and professional problems. The singer regained her freedom last November.
