Upper Palatinate: truck rams historic archway – Bavaria

A truck crashed into a historic archway in the Upper Palatinate, whereupon the walls partially collapsed. As the police announced on Wednesday, the 50-year-old driver probably misjudged the lateral distance. In the morning he crashed into the archway of Gnadenberg in the municipality of Berg (district of Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz).

Heavy rocks would have damaged both the semi-trailer, a parked vehicle and a light pole. Nobody was injured, it said. The damage is enormous, but difficult to quantify due to the ideal value of the archway, said a spokesman. It was initially unclear whether the gate could be rebuilt.

According to the information, the through town of Gnadenberg is closed to large trucks, but the gate is basically passable. Due to the closure of the nearby A3 motorway due to a traffic accident, the truck driver took the passage through Gnadenberg as an alternative route.
