Upper Franconia: A73 completely closed due to the installation of a railway bridge – Bavaria

A 1200-ton railway bridge has been placed over the Autobahn 73 in Upper Franconia since Saturday evening. According to a spokeswoman for Deutsche Bahn, the work is expected to last until Sunday at 12 noon. The Autobahn 73 near Eggolsheim (Forchheim district) is completely closed during this time.

The bridge, which is around 90 meters long, combines a steel arch bridge with a truss structure. The structure complements an identical bridge that has been crossing the A73 since September 2021. The expansion will enable more train journeys on the route between Nuremberg and Bamberg in the future. The section is used, for example, for the Munich-Berlin express connection and, according to Bahn, is used by around 30,000 trains a year.

The new railway bridge will be built next to an existing one, over which trains are already rushing – including on the Munich-Berlin route.

The bridge is being lowered centimeter by centimeter using special vehicles and cranes and thus brought into place. Tracks are then to be laid and the overhead line and signals installed. The first trains are expected to cross the new bridge in December 2023.
