There is a picture by the Flemish Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens in which he can be seen with his wife and their son. The three go for a walk in a park, flowers tendril over stone walls, a parrot sits on a fountain. On the excursion with his parents, the little one not only wears a chic sun-yellow dress, but is also led by his mother on a lead strap, a kind of child’s leash. The picture “The artist with his wife Hélène Fourment and their son Peter Paul” shows that about 300 years ago wealthy middle-class children were more likely to be kept on a short leash. Even if this allows more freedom of movement than just having to walk by the hand of the parents.
