Up to 20 degrees: the new year starts unusually warm

After a mild New Year’s Eve, it hasn’t cooled down on New Year’s Day either: with up to 20 degrees in the south-west, it is exceptionally warm in Germany. The German Weather Service recorded the warmest New Year’s Eve since weather records began.

The new year began with unusually mild temperatures of up to 20 degrees in south-west Germany. For the rest of Germany, the German weather service (DWD) predicted maximum temperatures of 13 to 18 degrees on New Year’s morning. There should be a lot of sunshine in the south. In the northwestern half, on the other hand, it will initially be cloudy to overcast, with some rain in places. In the north and in the low mountain ranges, stormy winds are still to be expected.

And it remains very mild: for Monday, the weather service predicts maximum values ​​of 9 to 14 degrees, on the Upper Rhine and in Saxony up to 16 degrees.

Warmest New Year’s Eve since weather records

The year 2022 ended with the warmest New Year’s Eve in Germany since weather records began in the 19th century. The DWD recorded record values ​​for December 31st.

The DWD measured temperatures of 20 degrees and more at four stations in Germany. In Wielenbach in the Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau, 20.8 degrees were measured around 2 p.m. and 20 degrees in Munich. In Baden-Württemberg, 20.3 degrees were measured in Müllheim near Freiburg and in Ohlsbach. According to the DWD, the previously highest temperature on New Year’s Eve was 17.0 degrees in 1961 in Müllheim. In 2021 it was 16.9 degrees warm in Freiburg im Breisgau.
