Watch the video: Unusual underwater recording – this is what an orca conversation sounds like.
The footage was taken by a US Coast Guard firefighter in Antarctica.
Orcas, also known as killer whales, are very social animals that always hunt in groups. They can grow up to 8 meters long and weigh around 5.5 tons: Orcas are considered the rulers of the oceans. The whales can make very different sounds. The special feature: Each group has its own language, which only the members understand. It takes a calf about two years to master all the sounds. The mammals, which weigh several tons, actually hunt for fish, seals or sometimes other whales, attacks on humans are extremely rare.
