This moment could have ended badly for a baby hawk. Footage shows an eagle abducting the young animal to its nest in British Columbia, Canada. The kings of the skies not only eat fish or small mammals, other birds are also on the menu.
But then the big surprise: The falcon baby is spared without further ado instead of being eaten. According to Joachim Schwarz from the Lower Saxony Eagle Protection Working Group, such behavior has already been documented several times abroad and also in Germany. He was also able to observe the phenomenon in Lower Saxony. Here a pair of white-tailed eagles brought their young, some of them alive, baby buzzards.
The bad news for the baby falcon from Canada: All young buzzards in the Lower Saxony eagle’s nest ended up being eaten or fed to the young. According to Schwarz, only once did two young buzzards manage to fledge and fly out of the German eagle’s nest.
The “Eagle-Cam” of the animal protection organization “GROWLS” now shows how the Canadian undercover eagle apparently lives as part of the small family. The question is how much longer.
