Unterschleißheim – The Dachauer Moos is relevant for the climate – District of Munich

Centuries-old, once wild landscapes such as the Dachau Moos are important because they store carbon and serve as a nature reserve – where they are still intact and not drained. In order to make nature conservation and management sustainable, many small steps and major U-turns are necessary.

Robert Rossa only has to walk a few meters and his shoes are right in the middle of his topic. He turns right at the parking lot at the Unterschleißheimer See and takes the bridge over a small stream. One more step, up into the field: Rossa bends down, boldly reaches into the black peat soil and grinds the material between his fingers until nothing is left. His fingers turn brown like his shoes, but everything else is gone. “It’s pure plant matter, not a bit of minerals,” says Rossa, “that dissolves.” The agricultural engineer and managing director of the Dachauer Moos Association only has a few stones left in his hand. With the little trick in which he magically dissolves soil into nothing, Rossa demonstrates why the preservation of the moss landscape is important for climate protection and why the management there should have changed long ago.
