Untermenzing: An additional location for the fire department – Munich

The professional fire department has found land for an additional location. It will most likely move to the corner of Mühlangerstrasse and Pasinger Heuweg in Untermenzing. The city council’s local committee cleared the way for this in a closed session: City hall politicians supported the acquisition of an area of almost 30,000 square meters for around 7.9 million euros.

This would mean that the previously announced location on Von-Kahr-Straße, which has been repeatedly criticized by local politicians, residents and green space protectors, would be lost. Citizens from Pasing-Obermenzing in particular have campaigned vehemently in recent years to preserve the so-called strawberry meadow south of Von-Kahr-Straße. Their goal: to prevent both a new school building including sports facilities on the site and the construction of a new fire station – in favor of the greenery and a fresh air corridor that is important for the climate.

It is now clear: There will be a new school south of Von-Kahr-Straße. Because the school center on Pfarrer-Grimm-Straße in Untermenzing is bursting at the seams, remedial action is urgently needed in view of the newly emerging residential areas and the associated growing number of students in the west of Munich. The only thing that remains to be clarified is whether a three-class elementary school or a five-class secondary school should be built at the location.

However, according to the current decision, the additional fire station location would be off the table – in favor of more open space on the strawberry meadow. “If everything works like this, it would be a great thing for everyone involved – cutting the Gordian knot, so to speak,” says City Councilor Heike Kainz (CSU).

It has long been known that the professional fire department needs to reorient itself. The capacities of fire station 6 on Bassermannstrasse have been exhausted, which is why the station is to be replaced by two new locations in Aubing and Allach-Untermenzing. According to the administration, such a division is “particularly advisable given the significant potential for inner-city densification in the entire west of Munich and the resulting expected increase in the number of deployments.”

A location on Pasinger Heuweg west of the existing cemetery would be ideally located, at the intersection of the districts of Aubing-Lochhausen-Langwied, Allach-Untermenzing and Pasing-Obermenzing. And on a large road that is easily navigable by emergency vehicles, just a few meters from the A8.

Another plus: the purchase of this property could also create a new geothermal energy plant for Munich. In any case, the municipal utilities have already signaled interest in the location. However, the decision is not yet completely dry. The approval of the full assembly of the city council is now only considered a formality.
