Unterhaching – Guided tours through the Biberbau – District of Munich

The dwelling of a beaver would probably not be very comfortable for us. The entrance to the rodent’s castle is always under water, and it’s also often damp and wet in his so-called living quarters, plus there’s mud and gnawed branches lying around – that doesn’t sound comfortable. Things are a bit different with the beaver den on the Stumpfwiese in Unterhaching, which owes its name not to the rodent but to the adjacent Biberger Straße. The multi-generation house, completed in June 2021, is home to 21 cooperative rental apartments and a dementia shared flat with ten places. There is also a common room, an apartment for guests and a car sharing station in the underground car park.

The client of the project is the Maro-Genossenschaft from Munich; the building was designed by architects H2R. The Biberbau is one of 167 “flagship projects”, as the Bavarian Chamber of Architects calls them, which are opening their doors this weekend as part of the “Architektouren” campaign. Under the nationwide motto “Architecture builds the future”, projects are to be presented that “are particularly characterized by sustainable building and their culture of conversion”, according to the Chamber of Architects. The beaver den in Unterhaching can be visited on Saturdays from 1 to 2 p.m. and from 3 to 4 p.m.
