Particularly talented students are supported with the Germany scholarship – with 300 euros per month. The number of scholarship holders increased compared to the previous year.

Last year, 30,500 students received a so-called Germany scholarship at Germany’s universities. This was announced by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden. The scholarship of 300 euros per month supports students whose career promises outstanding academic and professional achievements. It is financed half by the federal government and half by private donors, which the universities have to take care of themselves.

The number of scholarship holders rose by five percent in a nationwide comparison to the previous year. Compared to the total number of students, it was – as in 2021 – one percent. So about every hundredth person receives a Germany scholarship. The proportion was highest in Saarland at 2.2 percent. In Thuringia it was the least at 0.5 percent.

Federal Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger (FDP) said that against the background of the crises that the universities had to deal with in recent years, the scholarship program had “once again proven to be a crisis-proof and highly successful instrument for promoting talent”.
