Aerial images relayed by local televisions show the huge block of tar collapsed, with black smoke billowing from below. According to Capt. Derek Bowmer, a Philadelphia firefighter, his teams “arrived on scene and discovered a large fire originating from a vehicle”.
While several hundred thousand people use it every day, its closure risks causing many traffic jams in the region. “It’s a major artery for people and goods, and its closure will have significant consequences for the city and region until reconstruction is complete,” said Pete Buttigieg, US Secretary of Transportation.
The I-95 highway is over 3,000 kilometers long and connects the state of Maine, the extreme northeast of the United States, to Miami, Florida, a major axis for the east coast.
