United Nations: Iran expelled from women’s commission

Status: 14.12.2022 7:45 p.m

Iran has been expelled from a UN body for women’s rights at the instigation of the USA. The reason is the regime’s brutal actions against demonstrators. Iran’s UN ambassador was outraged.

Because of Iran’s ongoing violence against demonstrators, a United Nations body has decided to exclude the country from the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). The Economic and Social Council of the UN in New York voted with 29 votes from its 54 member states for a corresponding resolution by the United States. Russia and China, among others, voted against the decision.

“Human rights are increasingly suppressed”

The Commission, with its 45 members, aims to strengthen gender equality and the role of women. The Economic and Social Council also expressed deep concern that “since September 2022, the human rights of women and girls, including the right to freedom of expression and expression, have been continuously undermined and increasingly repressed” in Iran.

In Iran, people have been protesting against the country’s political elite and political system since mid-September. The trigger for the protests, which have been going on for more than two months, was the actions of the moral police against 22-year-old Mahsa Amini because she is said to have worn her headscarf improperly. Amini died on September 16 in the custody of the Vice President.

Iran’s UN ambassador accuses US of harassment

Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani accused the US of harassing his country. Iran, along with 17 other states, warned the Economic and Social Council of a precedent “that will ultimately prevent other member states with different cultures, customs and traditions (…) from participating in UN commissions”.
