Thanks to a great energy performance against Ajla Tomljanovic, Kerber secured the important individual point and celebrated her first win in the fourth match since her comeback.
As an outsider in the duel with Swiatek, her fresh self-confidence was evident right from the start. Kerber played bravely, threw in strong winners and challenged the favorite. The three-time major winner was only unable to take advantage of her five break chances. Swiatek then grabbed the 5:3 and brought the tight set to their side.
After an early break in favor of the Pole in the second set, Kerber seemed to lack the strength to hit back again. Swiatek now dominated and celebrated Poland’s first final point.
