Union Berlin manager Ruhnert: “We will figure it out again, with patience, without panic”

Today Union Berlin meets Real Madrid in the Champions League. A last big evening, an initial spark after hard weeks? In the interview, manager Oliver Ruhnert talks about the relegation battle in the Bundesliga, the wear and tear of strength – and his sympathies for Sahra Wagenknecht.

Mr. Ruhnert, is playing for the first time in the club’s history Union Berlin in the Champions League, but little is working at the moment. The team is bottom of the group and is fighting against relegation in the Bundesliga. Are these the growing pains of a small club or is this a crisis that threatens its existence?

Many people around me want to encourage me and say: It’s great the path you’ve taken. It’s great that you’re now playing in a group with Real Madrid and SSC Napoli. But it’s hard for me to think like that. I see how the team is struggling and how we are suffering primarily in the Bundesliga. That hurts.
