The number of refugees has reached a new record high. According to the United Nations, more than 100 million people are currently fleeing. The war in Ukraine alone added 14 million to the number.
For the first time in the world, more than 100 million people are fleeing conflict, violence, human rights violations and persecution. This figure was announced by the United Nations in Geneva. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi called the brand “equally sobering and alarming”. It was “a record that should never have been reached”.
According to data from the UN refugee agency UNHCR, the number of people displaced worldwide had risen to 90 million by the end of 2021, mainly due to new violence or ongoing conflicts in countries such as Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Myanmar, Nigeria, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In addition, the Russian attack that year displaced eight million people inside Ukraine; According to official figures, six million more left the country.

UNHRC chief Grandi praised the international willingness to help Ukrainian refugees. Ultimately, however, humanitarian aid only offers relief. In order to reverse the trend of rising refugee numbers, there is “only one answer: peace and stability, so that innocent people are not forced to choose between acute danger in their own country or dangerous flight and exile,” said Grandi.
The more than 100 million people forcibly displaced worldwide include refugees and asylum-seekers as well as the 53.2 million people displaced within their borders by conflict. On June 16, the UNHCR presents its annual report “Global Trends”.
