“Smoke Sauna Sisterhood”

Close to the skin and pores, Anna Hints’ documentary slips into the intimacy of the sacred saunas of Estonia, where women share their secrets as if to purge themselves of their ailments before snorting in the water frozen. Devoid of strong dramatic progression and sticking to a form of sororal trance, the film flows at a uniform pace which ends up slipping. But emotionally, it culminates in a stunning story of rape, suspended in the inexhaustible flow of words which seem to spring from faceless flesh, bathed in chiaroscuro.
