Undersea power cable damaged: power failure on Bornholm

Status: 10/10/2022 11:17 am

Apparently because an undersea power cable to Sweden was damaged, the power went out on the entire Baltic Sea island of Bornholm. The cause of the cable damage is still unclear, the electricity supplier warns against speculation.

On the Danish Baltic Sea island of Bornholm, the electricity failed across the board on Monday morning. According to the Danish authorities, an undersea cable that supplies electricity from Sweden has been damaged. The cause is not yet known.

Bornholm’s electricity supplier, Trefor, warned against speculation: “At the moment there is no reason to speculate about the cause,” the company said on its website. “And we are in the process of clarifying what is responsible for the blackout.”

The power outage happened just before 8 a.m. According to Trefor, around a third of the 40,000-inhabitant island had electricity again by 9:35 a.m., and the supply should be fully restored by noon. According to a report by the Danish broadcaster DR, a power plant on the island should be started up and ensure the power supply.

The company Energinet, which owns the submarine cable, spoke of a “fault in the high-voltage network”. We are working on finding the problem area.

Nord Stream blast near Bornholm

About a week and a half ago, the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea were damaged by explosions – two leaks were reported off Sweden and two off Denmark. Both incidents took place near Bornholm in international waters. The Swedish and Danish authorities assume that larger amounts of explosives were necessary for this. A state actor is suspected to be the perpetrator.
