Under Pressure: Public Service Broadcasting and its Critics – Media

For a fruitful debate about public service broadcasting, it is essential to separate the criticism: what is still constructive, what is exaggerated? Because together with other quality media, the institution still has an elementary function in democracy. And especially in times when it is so under attack. A look at other European countries shows that, despite all the criticism, the ÖRR has a comparatively secure footing in Germany.

SZ correspondent Oliver Meiler reports from Rome on the Italian RAI, which is heavily influenced by party politics and changes senior editors after elections. In an interview with ARD correspondent Annette Dittert in Great Britain, it becomes clear how much the BBC is under political pressure in the year of its 100th birthday.
