Under Bavaria: The Trachtler and the Niedertrachtler – Bavaria

You can currently see a lot of pictures of demonstrations in the newspapers. At one of a Bavarian farmers’ demonstration, a woman was seen holding a self-painted cardboard sign that read: “More intelligence, less education!” That was interesting because people don’t normally see a pair of opposites. Or find that one is usually related to the other.

But it doesn’t have to be. The beautiful line from Haindling’s idiot rap often applies to people who always like to insist on so-called “common sense”: “From a hundred meters you can see that a idiot is coming along!”

This reminds me of an experience from the late 1980s on the Munich S-Bahn, when it still largely ran according to schedule. Then a staggering and drunken skinhead got in, complained about “the dirty foreigners” and shouted right-wing radical slogans. Some rather small-chested men considered whether they could look indignant.

At the front of the car sat a man in his prime, whose stature, despite a slight paunch, was reminiscent of the blacksmith von Kochel, with his broad back and enormous calves. He wore a cardigan and old lederhosen, at a time when you didn’t have to dress up as a Werdenfels mountain farmer when you went to Oktoberfest.

He briefly raised his round head, rested his arms on his knees and leaned forward slightly. “Now you get your cunt and get out straight away,” he said to the bald man in a deep baritone and with all his peace of mind, “because otherwise you’ll end up poor!” Instantly there was silence and you could feel the spontaneous joy that passed through the car like a wave. The Naziskin looked at the man with glassy eyes, just grumbled briefly and got out at the next stop.

The Trachtler’s calm reaction back then certainly had a lot to do with intelligence and a lot to do with education, at least the education of the heart. He obviously didn’t care whether there was a left-wing extremist on the train who also shared his opinion: he simply said what he thought was right. And one only wishes that today’s blue-brown low-class people meet similarly courageous Bavarians who can recognize from a hundred meters away: Look hi, that’s a moron coming along.
