Uncertainties around the holding of the next Christmas market

Will the Lyonnais still be deprived of a Christmas market at the end of the year? After the cancellation of 2020, linked to the coronavirus epidemic, the 2021 edition could again be compromised. In any case, this is what the usual organizers fear, who criticize the town hall for having delayed too long to launch the call for tenders.

The text, inviting candidates to make themselves known before September 24, was reportedly published three weeks earlier. A deadline deemed too short. “The organization usually starts in April”, recalls the general manager of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes Gourmand Sylvie Marino, questioned by LyonMag, considering also not to be “technically able to set up” the Christmas market.

“Yes, we want the Christmas market to take place”

Finger pointing and criticized by the opposition, the town hall of Lyon reacted strongly. “Yes, we want the Christmas market to take place and we are actively working to find a solution”, replied on social networks Camille Augey, the assistant in charge of Employment and the Sustainable Economy. According to the elected official, one of the blocking points would be in particular the cost of securing the event, much higher since the Strasbourg attacks.

“It’s a big load. When we organize an event, the organizers must take care of these security costs, this is the case in Lyon, ”said the young woman on BFM TV. Before insisting once again: “We are trying to find solutions at this level. “
