UN vote on Russian ‘armed aggression’, ruble plunge and live conflict

Did you miss the news this early morning? We have concocted a recap (special Ukraine) to help you see things more clearly.

The UN will have to decide for or against Moscow. Russia will indeed meet this Monday, from 10 a.m. (4 p.m. in France), facing the General Assembly during an “emergency extraordinary session” of its 193 members. They are called upon to position themselves in favor of democracy and the sovereignty of Ukraine or the warlike invasion decided by Vladimir Putin. A vote on a resolution is expected at the end of the speeches which should continue on Tuesday due to the very large number of speeches. Entitled “Russia’s unprovoked armed aggression against Ukraine”, the initial draft of this resolution, piloted by the Europeans in coordination with Kiev, “condemns in the strongest terms Russia’s aggression against Ukrainian”.

It’s a tumble for the Russian ruble. Due to the numerous sanctions against Russia, the currency fell by almost 30% against the dollar on Monday. In order not to let investors panic, the Moscow Stock Exchange has postponed the opening time of its Forex, its foreign exchange market. Trading usually starts at 7 a.m., but this Monday it shouldn’t be before 3 p.m. The Russian Central Bank, also in the sights of Western sanctions, has planned to say more at 1 p.m. (11 a.m. in France).
