On the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the UN Security Council discussed possible solutions to the conflict – including Beijing’s move.

On the anniversary of the beginning of the war, more than 20 foreign ministers traveled to New York to take a high-ranking position. Federal Foreign Minister Baerbock also came and at the special session called on the members of the Security Council to oppose Russian President Putin: “This war is not the war of the Russian people. This war is Putin’s war. The Russian President is risking the future of his own country, his soldiers and children.”

A just peace is therefore also in the interest of the people in Russia. A peace based on the UN charter, which 141 states voted for yesterday in the United Nations General Assembly – and not on the basis of a ceasefire that China had previously called for.

“Any additional peace effort by a member of this council is valuable,” Baerbock said. “But peace must also mean peace. Peace must not mean that we ignore who is the aggressor and who is the victim. Because submission is not peace.”

Blinken warns of ‘unconditional ceasefire’

US Secretary of State Blinken warned the Security Council against a “temporary or unconditional ceasefire”. Even if he didn’t explicitly mention China in his speech, he probably meant the position paper from Beijing.

Russia will use any lull in fighting to consolidate control over illegally captured territory and increase its forces for further attacks.

Blinken also emphasized that there is an aggressor and a victim in this war. Russia fight for conquest. Ukraine for their freedom. It is a battle from which his country will emerge victorious, according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kuleba: “Ukraine will continue to resist and Ukraine will win. Putin will lose much sooner than he thinks.”

Nebensja tried to provoke

Kuleba also called again for the establishment of a war crimes tribunal modeled after the Nuremberg Trials after World War II. When the Ukrainian foreign minister initiated a minute’s silence for the victims of the war after his speech, the Russian ambassador to the UN, Nebensia, took the floor and demanded that the victims on both sides since 2014 should be commemorated.

The representative of Russia also tried to provoke in other ways. At first, Nebensia wanted to prevent the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kuleba from speaking in front of the council members. Then he accused the West of wanting to destroy Russia. The word “peace” is used in an insincere manner.

What is meant is a capitulation by Russia, which ideally inflicts a strategic defeat on Russia, followed by the dissolution of the country and the reorganization of the territories.

Nebenzia accused Western countries of interfering and condemned arms sales to Ukraine. Allegations that Federal Foreign Minister Baerbock rejected: “Looking around, I’m under no illusions: we won’t convince the Russian representative today. He won’t even listen. But what the Security Council can do is not close its eyes to Butcha, Kharkiv, Mariupol and Bakhmut, before the people and the children of Ukraine. What we can do is stand up for a world where peace means peace.”
