Guterres “shocked” after attacks on UN schools in Gaza

UN Secretary General Guterres repeatedly warns about the supposed inviolability of UN facilities in the Gaza Strip. But once again he laments “a devastating and unacceptable number of civilian casualties.”
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said he was deeply shocked by attacks on two UN schools in Gaza. “Dozens of people – many women and children – were killed and injured while sheltering in the compound United Nations,” Guterres said on Sunday in New York. “I emphasize again that UN premises are inviolable,” he continued.
“This war has a devastating and unacceptable number of civilian casualties every day, including women and children,” Guterres said. “That has to stop.” Guterres renewed his call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and he thanked the Qatari government for mediating between the warring parties.
Numerous people are said to have died when a bullet hit one of the two UN schools hit on Saturday in the refugee district of Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip. The UN Palestinian Relief Agency (UNRWA) said up to 7,000 people sought refuge in the school from the shelling.
