According to the UN, more than eight million people have fled the Russian war of aggression within Ukraine. In many cases, humanitarian aid does not reach the people.

In Ukraine, more than eight million people have now been displaced within the country as a result of the Russian war of aggression. This was reported by the UN Organization for Migration (IOM).

In addition, a good 5.9 million people have crossed national borders to flee abroad, according to statistics from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Before the Russian invasion on February 24, Ukraine had a population of about 44 million.

Many Ukrainians remain in the country

Although many Ukrainians have already fled the country, according to the IOM, more than 2.7 million people have returned to their home towns. 93 percent of them had previously sought refuge in neighboring towns or other parts of the country.

Many displaced persons have no money

IOM surveyed displaced persons within the country between April 17 and May 3 about their needs. Two-thirds said they needed cash. More than 70 percent said they wanted to use it to buy food or medicine. IOM Director General António Vitorino described a precarious situation:

The needs of the internally displaced and everyone affected by the war in Ukraine is growing by the hour.

Due to the ongoing fighting, it is difficult to reach all people in need with humanitarian aid.
