Nicaragua accuses Germany of complicity in the genocide in Gaza – because of arms deliveries to Israel. An urgent procedure should force the stop. Berlin firmly rejects allegations.

Nicaragua has Germany accused before the highest UN court of complicity in the genocide in the Gaza Strip. By supplying arms to Israel, Germany is enabling genocide and violating international law, Nicaragua’s legal representatives explained to the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Germany has already clearly contradicted the allegations. Israel also firmly rejects any violation of the Genocide Convention and invokes its right to self-defense after the massacres by the Islamist Hamas and other extremist Palestinian organizations on October 7th.

Germany should stop arms deliveries to Israel

Nicaragua initially wants to urgently ensure that Germany has to stop arms deliveries to Israel. The judges should also order that Germany resume support for the UN relief agency for Palestine refugees UNRWA in the Gaza Strip. Nicaragua argues that by providing “political, financial and military support” to Israel and by suspending funding for UNRWA, Germany is enabling genocide and is failing in its duty to prevent genocide.

German representatives will not officially comment in court until Tuesday. The hearings are scheduled to last two days. A decision is expected in about two weeks. These decisions are binding. Both states are not directly involved in the war, but have signed the UN Genocide Convention. In it they undertake to prevent acts of genocide.

It is the second genocide lawsuit before the UN court in connection with the war in Gaza. At the end of last year, South Africa had already accused Israel of genocide against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and called for an urgent ceasefire. The court has not done that yet. However, it has ordered Israel to allow significantly more humanitarian aid and to do everything possible to prevent genocide.
