Uli Hoeneß: Kahn as sports director at FC Bayern was a “big mistake” – Sport

Uli Hoeneß wants to ensure personnel clarity in FC Bayern’s management team within a year. When asked about a possible commitment from Max Eberl, the honorary president said on Sunday evening in the BR: “I estimate that for the next six to twelve months we will have the staffing that the future should have.”

Eberl, 50, who was recently released from RB Leipzig, has been traded at Bayern for a long time and the position of sports director is currently vacant in Munich. As soon as there is clarity in this area, Hoeneß continued, “Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and I will withdraw somewhat to the position on the supervisory board, which is only intended to act in an advisory capacity.” The 71-year-old said that he and long-time CEO Rummenigge would also take on operational tasks, “until we notice that the ship is sailing straight again.”

In retrospect, Hoeneß described the appointment of Oliver Kahn as CEO as a “big mistake. And when I realized that he couldn’t do that, I changed that together with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.” Kahn was fired at the end of last season, Hoeneß and Rummenigge are both on the supervisory board with boss Herbert Hainer.

The long-time Bayern president said that the release of coach Julian Nagelsmann last March was “not necessarily wise.” As national coach, Nagelsmann can now provide important impulses. “He’s completely fresh,” said Hoeneß: “He’s recovered well now and will move forward at full speed.”
