Fleeing Russian bombs and tanks – Millions of people have already fled Ukraine. In Germany alone, more than 600,000 refugees have already been registered, mainly women and children.
Since the start of the Russian war of aggression, more than 600,000 people from Ukraine have been registered as refugees in Germany. This is the result of an evaluation by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF).
From the end of February to the end of April, 610,103 people from Ukraine have been registered so far, reports the Funke media group from the statistics, which are based on data from the Central Register of Foreigners (AZR). Accordingly, a good 80 percent of the adults were women. Almost 40 percent of the refugees are children.
Data only conditionally meaningful
However, it is unclear how many traveled on to another European country after being recorded in Germany or returned to their homeland despite the fighting. According to the authorities, it could be a “significant number”. People often didn’t sign off.
It also cannot be ruled out that refugees from Ukraine were recorded twice in the central register of foreigners. The Central Register of Foreigners is a nationwide personal database that is managed by the BAMF. The statistics are based on information from the immigration authorities, the police and local registration authorities in the federal states and municipalities.
Fewer refugees, more returnees
According to the federal police, the number of refugees from Ukraine newly arriving in Germany had recently fallen significantly compared to March. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) recently spoke of around 20,000 Ukrainians returning to their home country from Poland alone every day.
In total, more than five million people have left Ukraine, at least temporarily, since the Russian attack on February 24.
