The new Ukrainian Ambassador Makeyev has praised Germany’s willingness to help. The daily topics he said Ukraine will win and “then there will be no more refugees”. With German politics it is now important to build trust.

The new Ukrainian ambassador Oleksiy Makejev has been in office for two weeks. In a first detailed television interview with the daily topics he said that Germany was “the best country I could imagine” for him as a diplomat. He wants to be convincing, motivating, open-minded and “very direct in conversation” with German politicians.

Trust should arise

Discussions behind closed doors should not leak out and should be discussed too much in public. One of the most important qualities of a diplomat is trust. He wants to do everything to ensure that trust with German politicians “is created and maintained,” said Makejev.

Communication is an important issue. He wants to be open to the media and social media: “I want to reach every German.” He was very satisfied with the pace that relations with Ukraine had developed over the past week. He hopes it goes on like this.

Appeal to Germany

Regarding the Ukrainian refugees who come to Germany, the ambassador says that he feels every day that Germany is helpful. More than 70 percent of the population would support Ukraine. In this context, he appealed to Germany: “Please support us as long as possible, we will win this war and then there will be no more refugees.”

Makejev had taken over the post from Andriy Melnyk. He had previously worked at the embassy in Berlin. In 2014, then Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin made him his political director, and in 2020 he became sanctions officer.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recalled Melnyk from his post in mid-July. He had not only made a name for himself with often harsh criticism of the federal government since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
