The Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Makeiev, has sharply criticized the peace appeal of several former SPD politicians. The call has the sole aim of “covering up the crimes of Russia”.

The Ukrainian Ambassador Oleksii Makeiev has sharply criticized the call by former high-ranking SPD politicians and trade unionists for peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. “This peace appeal is not an April Fool’s joke. It is pure cynicism towards the numerous victims of the Russian aggression,” Makeiev told the dpa news agency. He has only one goal: “To cover up the crimes of Russia and, accordingly, the responsibility of the Russian regime.”

In view of the brutal Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the only possible appeal for peace is: “Mr. Putin, immediately withdraw your troops from the entire Ukrainian territory!”

The initiator is Peter Brandt, son of Willy Brandt

The appeal entitled “Create Peace!” was initiated by the historian Peter Brandt, a son of the former Chancellor Willy Brandt, together with the former head of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB), Reiner Hoffmann, and the federal chairman of the Friends of Nature, Michael Müller.

In it, Chancellor Olaf Scholz is called upon to work with France to persuade the countries of Brazil, China, India and Indonesia to mediate in order to quickly achieve a ceasefire. “That would be a necessary step to stop the killing and to explore possibilities for peace. Only then can the path to a common security order in Europe be paved.”

The signatories include ex-EU Commissioner Günter Verheugen, former President of the Bundestag Wolfgang Thierse and former SPD leader Andrea Ypsilanti in Hesse.
