Ukraine war: Wagner group vs. Russian military: Putin messing around with fire

The Kremlin hardly accidentally “forgets” to mention the Wagner mercenaries in one of its few reports of success and at the same time makes the country’s top soldier the supreme commander. A bizarre battle between military leaders is raging in Moscow.

The battle for Soledar raged not only in the streets of the 11,000-inhabitant town, but also in the Telegram channels of the “Group Wagner”. On January 10, a Tuesday, Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Russian mercenary army, reported the fall of the town – and immediately met with opposition. From Ukraine, of course, but surprisingly also from the Russian Defense Ministry. Moscow can use every success story well. That followed later: On Thursday evening, January 12, Moscow confirmed the conquest, but without mentioning the involvement of the Wagner soldiers.
