Many people who fled to Lviv from all over Ukraine in the past few weeks want to stay forever. Apartments are scarce, rents are skyrocketing – and landlords are simply throwing people out on the street.
Nadja Kyrpenko, 36, and her husband Vitali, 40, cleared their furniture ten days ago from the two-storey roof terrace apartment on Konowaletz-Allee, which is lined with chestnut trees, packed their belongings in 60 boxes and then stowed them in containers. Yesterday Nadja completed the handover of the chic 200 square meter apartment in the west of the Ukrainian city of Lviv to the landlords. “The apartment owner doubled the rent in one fell swoop from the equivalent of 1,000 euros to 2,000 euros. We can no longer afford that,” says Nadja Kyrpenko.
