For western-secular ears it seems strange: This Friday – the Feast of the Annunciation – Pope Francis wants to “consecrate the Ukraine and Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary” in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome – the Vatican has announced. At the same time, the Pope’s social commissioner, Curia Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, will celebrate the same liturgy in the world’s most important Marian shrine in Fatima, Portugal.
