Rescue work in Ukraine continues after Russian attacks on Sunday. There were several deaths. Moscow continues to attack the country. And Japan wants to help Ukraine – an overview of the night.

According to the Ukrainian military, Russia launched a large-scale airstrike during rush hour in the morning. There are several regions in the Ukraine affected, the Ukrainian military said. There is an air alert throughout the country. “Kiev – take cover!” writes the Air Force on the Telegram short message service. The capital is exposed to a threat from ballistic missiles. The cities of Kryvyi Rih, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Khmelnytskyi were also exposed to a “massive rocket attack” by the Russian armed forces, the military in the respective cities said.

According to observers, almost a dozen strategic bombers fired cruise missiles at targets in Ukraine. Kinschal (Dagger) hypersonic missiles are also in use. Air alerts were sounded across Ukraine.

The country has been fending off a Russian invasion for over 22 months. Moscow has already used thousands of missiles against targets in Ukraine.

Japan announces million-dollar aid for Ukrainian air defense

During a visit to Kiev, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa promised Ukraine support in its continued defense against the Russian war of aggression. Japan will pay 37 million US dollars (33.7 million euros) into a NATO fund, Kamikawa said on Sunday at a joint press conference with her counterpart Dmytro Kuleba. This money should then benefit the Ukrainian air defense and flow into systems for drone detection. Russia has been attacking its neighboring country for months, particularly with large-scale combat drone attacks.

Japan supports Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion that has been going on for almost two years and, in line with the West, has also imposed sanctions against Russia. Kamikawa’s predecessor Yoshimasa Hayashi and Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida were also in Ukraine for talks last year. However, the country’s pacifist constitution does not allow Japan to supply weapons to Ukraine itself.

After Russian attack: rescue work in Pokrovsk continues

Meanwhile, rescue work is still ongoing in the eastern Ukrainian district of Pokrovsk, more than a day after heavy Russian rocket attacks left at least eleven dead. In the affected places, which are in the Ukrainian-controlled part of the Donetsk region, the search for victims under the rubble is continuing, said President Volodymyr Zelenskyj in his evening video address. He thanked all the rescuers who have been on site since Saturday evening.

The serious attacks on Saturday evening shook not only the district town of Pokrovsk but also the town of Rivne. According to official Ukrainian information, a rocket hit the house of a family of six. Accordingly, the bombardment was carried out using repurposed S-300 anti-aircraft missiles.

Dead and injured after Russian shelling of Kherson

Deaths from Russian shelling were also reported in the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson on Sunday. Two people were killed and several others were injured, wrote military governor Olexander Prokudin on Telegram. “The Russian army shelled the residential areas of Kherson continuously for a few hours today.” Among other things, a market and several residential buildings were hit.
