Ukrainian General Valeriy Zalushny is no longer at the head of the military there. President Zelenskyj replaced him with the previous army chief Olexandr Syrskyj. In a post on the online platform X, Zelensky said he thanked the general for his service. “The time for such renewal is now,” said the President of Ukraine in a video message.
Selenskyj offered Saluschnyj to “remain part of the team”. He also discussed with him “who could be in the renewed leadership of the armed forces.”
“The tasks of 2022 are different from those of 2024,” Zalushnyj wrote after meeting Zelensky. “That’s why everyone has to change and adapt to the new realities.” Changes are necessary in order to “win together” after resisting the Russian attack together in 2022, he wrote.
Syrskyj was previously the commander of the Ukrainian ground forces
Zelensky said he had appointed Syrsky, the previous commander of the Ukrainian ground forces, as army chief. The 58-year-old has been involved in the effort since 2013 army adapt to NATO standards.
“Today it was decided to change the leadership of the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” said Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. The statement followed days of speculation after local media reported that Zelensky might fire the top general.
