There is hardly anything that people who have fled the Ukraine want more than the latest news about the situation in their home country. And in a language they understand.

Hundreds of thousands of people from Ukraine are currently having to flee their homes, many of them seeking protection in Germany. Countless volunteers willingly take refugees in and take care of the traumatized families – but there is one thing they have not been able to offer so far: current news from Ukraine in the native language of the refugees. The television stations RTL and ntv now want to remedy this.

In a new news format in Ukrainian, the renowned Ukrainian TV journalist Karolina Ashion presents the most important topics relating to the Ukraine conflict and everyday life of the refugees in Germany in around ten-minute programs every day. The 46-year-old comes from Kyiv and has worked in the Ukrainian television business and for various stations as a journalist and presenter for more than 20 years. She too had to flee to Germany because of the war.

Ukraine News – in Ukrainian

Stephan Schmitter, Managing Director of RTL News, says: “We’ve been providing our viewers and users with high-quality news since the beginning of the war. We’re there where it happens. We’re working hard to verify the material. The situation of the People in Ukraine and the refugees in Germany is depressing – with the ‘Ukraine Update’ we want to give you a secure news overview. We will also strengthen our team with other colleagues from Ukraine, who we hope will give them a bit of normality and security here with us.”

Moderator Karolina Ashion says: “I see this project as a privilege. I want to make a contribution so that people who seek protection here in Germany find out what is happening in our homeland.” The “Ukraine Update” is available Monday to Friday RTL.news, ntv.de and up YouTube to see.
