To get an idea of the global consequences of the Ukraine conflict, it is worth making a video call to Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. Lennart Lehmann, who works there for Welthungerhilfe, explains that some people in the metropolis are now sitting in the dark because they can no longer afford electricity. Because of the high food prices, schools often no longer offer lunch and many families have to do without entire meals. More and more people can be seen begging on the streets and students are moving back to their parents due to lack of money. “It’s a threatening and frightening situation for many people,” says Lennart Lehmann.
