Impressions from Lviv: Conversations with people who are in this city with their body but are still in the basement of Mariupol with their spirit – and who the war could have hit quite differently.

Now the war is being inventoried. First in Bucha, then in Borodyanka, then probably in Mariupol, in Kharkiv, in … The places of horror will be lined up, day after day, week after week, as the Russian frenzy of extermination against Ukraine continues. The corpses are examined and sorted into categories to help classify the killings: at point-blank range or from afar, with their hands tied or still holding their bikes, shot from behind or in front, in the head or in the back, are they naked bodies or are they still covered by what people were wearing when they were taken from their lives, it can be seen whether they were tortured or raped, are they men or women or children. Satellite images are analyzed, videos verified, bullet casings collected, all forensic methodology is used to classify and assess the crimes. And none of this will ease the shock.
