Ukraine-News: ++ Majority of Ukrainians reject compromises with Russia ++

In Ukraine, an overwhelming majority in a poll opposed compromises with wartime antagonist Russia in exchange for a peace deal. According to the results of two well-known institutes published on Tuesday, more than 90 percent of the approximately 2,000 respondents were against the transfer of territory. Just under 74 percent ruled out joining the NATO military alliance. A reduction in the number of troops in the army in peacetime was rejected by 80 percent.

At the same time, only just under 49 percent of Ukrainians saw a positive development of events in their own country. In December last year, after the successful expulsion of the Russian occupiers from northern Ukraine and large parts of the Kharkiv and Cherson regions, almost 60 percent still believed that.

Ukraine has been repelling a Russian invasion for almost 18 months with massive Western aid. Russian demands include relinquishing Ukrainian territory in the east and south, including the Crimean peninsula annexed in 2014. The survey was conducted from August 9 to 15 in the government-controlled regions excluding Luhansk Oblast, Donetsk Oblast and the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea. In total, 2019 adult Ukrainians were personally interviewed. The error tolerance should not exceed 2.3 percent.

09:47 – Portugal’s President Rebelo de Sousa arrived in Ukraine

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has arrived in Ukraine for a two-day visit. The head of state had arrived in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev by train from Poland, reports said the state television station RTP and other Portuguese media.

On Thursday he will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In addition, Rebelo de Sousa wants to take part in the summit of the so-called international Crimea platform. With this visit, he wanted to “give continuity to the Portuguese presence” and “show solidarity in all areas,” said Rebelo de Sousa after his arrival.

According to the information, the Portuguese delegation also includes Foreign Minister João Gomes Cravinho.

Portugal is providing military support to the country attacked by Russia. It was among the first Western allies to pledge to equip a Ukrainian battalion with Leopard 2A6 tanks. The country has now delivered three of these tanks. Portugal is also part of the so-called fighter jet coalition.

09:28 – London: Russian supplies sometimes have to take long detours

The Russian troops in southern Ukraine sometimes have to take long supply routes after Ukrainian attacks on bridges. This emerges from the daily intelligence report from the Ministry of Defense in London. Accordingly, two bridges between the Russian-occupied Black Sea peninsula of Crimea and southern Ukraine were hit and damaged by precision strikes in early August. The British announced that floating bridges were still in use at the crossings from Tschonhar and Henichesk in the middle of the month.

“The pontoon bridges should not be able to withstand the entire volume of heavy vehicles with ammunition and weapons,” the statement continued. The resulting bottleneck meant that Russian forces were partially dependent on a long detour via Armiansk in northern Crimea. “This places an additional burden on Russia’s logistical network in the south,” the statement said.
