The Russian war of aggression in Ukraine has so far EUR 2.4 billion in damage to cultural heritage of the country caused. Approximately 248 monuments be damagedsome of them completely destroyed was announced by the UN cultural organization Unesco on the occasion of the visit to Ukraine by its Director General Audrey Azoulay. The situation is worst in the east of the country. The Russian invasion also brought the cultural part of the economy to a complete standstill, Unesco explains. In the areas of entertainment, art and tourism alone, the losses accordingly up 13.9 billion euros.
Azoulay promises the government in Kiev support in “developing a reconstruction plan for the cultural sector”. She appreciated that around 6.4 billion euros required would be to this area again build and boost.
Seven cultural sites and one natural site in Ukraine are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, including the historic center of Odessa in the south-west of the country, which has so far been relatively unscathed by the war. 16 other sites, including the city center of Chernihiv, which was badly damaged during the first months of the war, are on a list of proposals for future UNESCO nominations.
