At his meeting with Vladimir Putin, Viktor Orbán praised the “Hungarian model”: Hungary is a member of NATO and the EU and yet can maintain “excellent contacts with Russia”. As a reward for his flexibility, he took with him pledges of friendship and promises of more cheap gas supplies – a gift that other European leaders and politicians would love to receive, notwithstanding current tensions with Moscow.
