UK: MP returns after amputations

A British MP had to have both hands and feet amputated due to sepsis. After a break of several months, Craig Mackinlay reappeared in Parliament in London on Wednesday to thunderous applause. Speaker of the House Lindsay Hoyle personally picked up the conservative politician at the entrance and escorted him up the steps.

In the conference room, the 57-year-old waved his silver prosthetics to his colleagues, who received him with a standing ovation. Opposition leader Keir Starmer, the head of the social democratic Labour Party, also praised Mackinlay’s fighting spirit and duty.

The MP suffered septic shock on September 27, 2023. In the hospital he was placed in an induced coma for 16 days and underwent surgery on December 1st. Mackinlay wants to stand again in his constituency in southeast England in the upcoming general election, which is scheduled to take place later this year.
