A British grandmother said on the social media platform “Reddit” that she is asking for ten euros an hour to look after her grandson. The users reacted with incomprehension.

Balancing family, work and the like in everyday life can be quite exhausting. Most parents can tell you a thing or two about that. It is all the better if family members live nearby and can help out or are happy to provide advice and assistance. So the grandma can be converted into a babysitter – practical, right?
In principle, a British grandmother sees it exactly the same way on the social media platform “Reddit”. She helps her daughter wherever she can and loves to look after her grandson – but only for a small fee. Completely justified or totally exaggerated? This is how she justifies her request.
Grandma charges ten euros an hour to look after her own grandchildren
“My daughter works five days a week, about seven to eight hours a day, from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm. She asked me if I would be willing to look after her son for two or three days.” This is what a grandmother who wants to remain anonymous writes on “Reddit”.
She would love to take care of the children, of course she would be willing to help – but only if her daughter pays her an hourly wage of nine pounds. That is the equivalent of around 10.50 euros an hour. Their reasoning: “I work full-time myself and am not a nanny!”
Your daughter is fine with it, she would like to reward her mother for the work. The only catch: she can only pay 7.50 pounds, which is around 8.80 euros, a little less than her mother imagines. The grandma is not satisfied with that and shares her story on social media. However, she does not meet with much understanding there.
“Reddit” users think Grandmother is outrageous
Her statement sparked a heated discussion on social networks and heated people’s minds. Most users are anything but enthusiastic about such an attitude: “Dude, just say that you don’t want to babysit. You are asking for so much money that she obviously cannot afford.”
Another user writes: “Sure, in a daycare your daughter will probably have to pay that too – maybe even more. But in a daycare people have qualifications and certificates. Why do you think that you deserve a wage that is almost as high is like that of professional child minders? “
This example shows: it does not always make sense to include your own family in childcare.
